How to test panels and height adjusters to identify the cause of slow seatbelt retraction

If the belt is retracting slowly and have you have to feed it manually. Check the panels and height adjusters to ensure nothing is pressing on the webbing and causing the slow retraction. Below are instructions that can help you test the panel and height adjusters.

To test panels and height adjusters to identify the cause of slow seatbelt retraction, follow these steps:

1. Inspect the Seatbelt Mechanism
  • Visual Inspection: Check for visible dirt, debris, or damage on the seatbelt webbing and mechanism.
  • Tension Test: Pull the seatbelt out fully and let it retract while observing its speed. If it retracts slowly, proceed with the following steps.
2. Test the Height Adjuster
  • Adjust Position: Move the height adjuster to its lowest and highest positions. Test the seatbelt retraction in each position.
  • Identify Resistance: If the retraction improves or worsens at a specific height, the height adjuster might be causing friction or misalignment.
3. Remove and Inspect Panels
  • Access the Mechanism: Carefully remove the panels around the seatbelt retractor and height adjuster using appropriate tools.
  • Inspect for Obstructions: Look for dirt, debris, or misaligned components in the housing.
  • Lubrication Check: Inspect for lack of lubrication or buildup that may cause resistance.
4. Test Retractor Functionality
  • Manual Check: Pull the seatbelt out and let it retract while observing the retractor directly.
  • Spring Tension: Verify if the retraction spring is functioning correctly. Weak tension indicates a problem with the spring.
5. Clean and Lubricate Components
  • Webbing Cleaning: Clean the seatbelt webbing with a mild soap and water solution to remove dirt and reduce drag.
  • Lubricate Moving Parts: Use a silicone-based lubricant on the height adjuster and retractor (avoid using oil-based lubricants that can attract dirt).
6. Reassemble and Test
  • Reinstall Panels: Put the panels back in place, ensuring they are secured properly to avoid future interference.
  • Final Test: Test the retraction speed again to confirm if the issue is resolved.
    • If the belt is retracting smoothly outside of the vehicle when it is not installed, then it is most likely an install error, please review your installation again.
    • If the retraction is still slow after these steps, the issue might be with the retractor spring or other internal components, which may require our assistance.
