What is an OCSM?

An OCSM in a vehicle stands for "Occupant Classification System Module," which is a sensor system that detects the weight and presence of a passenger on the front seat, allowing the airbag control unit to determine the appropriate level of airbag deployment based on whether an adult or child is seated there; essentially, it helps tailor airbag deployment to the occupant size to maximize safety.

Key points about OCSM:
  • Function:
It primarily measures passenger weight to differentiate between an adult and a child sitting in the passenger seat.
  • Impact on airbags:
Based on the OCSM data, the airbag control unit decides how forcefully to deploy the passenger airbag in a crash situation.
  • Location:
Usually located under the passenger seat.
  • Important for child safety:
By accurately identifying a child in the passenger seat, the OCSM can prevent excessive airbag force that could be harmful.
